Where is Hotel 1928?

Hotel 1928 is in the heart of Waco at 701 Washington Ave, Waco, TX 76701, within walking distance to The Magnolia Silos and Magnolia Market.

What is the story behind Hotel 1928?

Originally opened in 1928, Hotel 1928 is the restoration and adaptive reuse of the former Grand Karem Shrine Building.

The 1920s agricultural boom in Waco brought about a period of significant expansion. Eager to cater to the rising population, the local chapter of Shriners—a social club known for its community outreach and philanthropy—embarked on a project to erect the state-of-the-art Karem Building. Inspired by Middle Eastern and Moorish architectural influences, the building stands alone as a captivating landmark in the heart of Waco.

In 1995, the building sold to the county. And over time, the spirited energy that once filled every corner dimmed.

Combining their passion for home, hospitality, and restoration, Chip and Joanna Gaines and AJ Capital Partners partnered to re-envision this historic building to create a hospitality experience with 33 guest rooms, three dining concepts, and over 6,600 square feet of event space.

The loving restoration retains the historic architectural features, including Moorish-style arched entry and a large ballroom. The entry foyer features decorative symbols of Freemasons and Shriners, including scimitars, double eagles, and the Masonic compass and square.

What time is check-in/check-out?

Check-in begins at 4:00 pm CT daily. Guests are asked to check out before noon CT.

I booked on a website other than the hotel website and need to change to my reservation. How do I do this?

To make changes on third-party reservations please contact the company you made the reservation through.

What is your cancellation policy?

To avoid a one-night cancellation fee (room + tax), cancellations must be made by 4:00 pm CT, 72 hours prior to arrival. When booking through a room block or with a special promotion, please refer to your confirmation for details on other cancellation policies.

Can I request early check-in?

While we cannot guarantee early check-in, you may submit a request by contacting our reservations team by email at reservations@hotel1928.com. If we can’t accommodate, we’ll gladly stow your luggage safely and securely at reception.

Do you offer cribs and/or rollaway beds?

One crib and rollaway bed are permitted in most room categories. Cribs are complimentary, while rollaway beds are $30 per night.

What is the pet policy?

Hotel 1928 is a pet friendly hotel. Guests who travel with their pet(s) will be asked to sign a waiver upon check-in, holding the guest liable for any physical damage caused by their pet anywhere in the hotel.

  • Fees: $35 nightly fee for each pet; $250 disturbance fee should your pet(s) create a guest complaint
  • Maximum of 2 pets (must weigh less than 50 lbs.)
  • Pets must be on a leash at all times
  • Pets are not allowed in restaurant and event spaces

Is breakfast included?

Hotel 1928 does not offer complimentary breakfast. A full breakfast menu is available daily through our room service menu or at our restaurants.

Limited turndown service is provided each night. Full-service housekeeping is provided daily unless otherwise requested.

Yes, each room is equipped with a minibar that is stocked with our favorite locally sourced snacks and beverages available for purchase.

Are pack ‘n plays or rollaway beds available?

One pack ‘n play and rollaway bed is permitted in most room categories. For more information, please contact the front desk. Pack ‘n plays are complimentary, while rollaway beds are permitted at a fee of $30 per night.

Do you have non-smoking rooms?

Hotel 1928 is a non-smoking facility, with a $500 fee if guests smoke in the rooms.

Due to the intimate nature of the common spaces, we do not accept photoshoot rentals at Hotel 1928. If you have a guest room booked, photography is allowed in the guest room only. Onsite wedding packages include photography.
